Why We Chase
Warmth
By Alsay
It is not really about the heat. Or the beach. Or even the escape, exactly. When the days shorten and the light changes, something in us recognises that we are about to enter a different season, and we reach for warmth like it is the last thing that will keep us anchored to the version of ourselves we just were.
That desire to chase warmth - to book the ticket, pack the bag, leave - is not frivolous. It is ancient.
The Physics
What Heat Does to the Body
Heat does specific things. It relaxes muscles that tension holds tight in cold months. It increases blood flow. It makes the body feel held and safe in a way that cold never does. When the temperature drops outside, we lose that - and something in us knows exactly what we have lost.
That is why we chase it. Not for escape alone - for the feeling of the body in its most open, most receptive state. That is what warmth gives us.
And in that openness, we become someone else. Someone lighter. Someone who moves differently. Someone who is not braced against the world.
The Identity
Who We Become in Warmth
In warmth we wear less. We show more. We move with freedom that the Northern Hemisphere barely permits half the year. We exist in our bodies more fully, and that feels like becoming a different version of ourselves - not a worse one or a better one, just a different one.
That person - the one in the heat, in light clothes, moving without the armour we build against cold - she exists in all of us. And she deserves time to breathe. When the seasons change, we chase her. We chase warmth to find her again.
That is why the chase is not frivolous. It is essential.
"We do not chase warmth for escape. We chase it to become ourselves."
The Transition
Living Between Seasons
But there is a version of this that does not require going far. The clothes we wear are the first language of warmth. A linen dress says what we are looking for before we even get on the plane. A pair of lightweight trousers, a shirt that breathes, pieces that were made for heat - these are ways of keeping that feeling alive even when the world is cooling down.
You do not have to wait for a plane ticket to access that version of yourself. You can dress for her now. You can live as her, at least sometimes, even as the season shifts around you.
And maybe that is the real magic of chasing warmth - not the destination, but the intentional choice to remain connected to it, to that open, light version of ourselves, for as long as we possibly can.
Warmth is not a luxury. It is a version of yourself that deserves access, and a way of moving through the world that you earned the right to.
So chase it. Whether that means booking the trip or dressing for the feeling at home. Either way, you are choosing yourself. And that choice is never frivolous.
